Old news. Bad news. Fake news. Sometimes you want to shut down and get no news at all! I aim to change that by focusing on good people doing good works. I visit with artists, educators, civic & spiritual leaders, musicians, business owners, students, volunteers, and everyday citizens who are using their creativity, resources, and talents to bring hope, happiness, and goodness to their corner of the world.

BONUS - The Teasers - Episodes 54–100 - Find the Good News with Brother Oran
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Find the Good News has been a positive experience for me, and a project that has allowed me to use my communication, design, and production skills paired with my deep desire to reflect on the human condition, that is to mean the great questions of why we are here, who we are, what is goodness, and what inspires some to right action.
Find the Good News has been an evolving project, and in episode 54 I decided to change the edit a bit by pulling a short clip from the guest, placing it at the beginning of the episode, giving listeners a teaser that frames the tone of the episode.
Recently, Find the Good News reached the milestone of 100 numbered episodes. I thought it might be fun to take all of the teasers from the beginning of each episode, 54 through 100, and place them into one listening experience. While it's not a conversation, it is a quick glimpse into the overall expanse, depth, and variety of conversations this format has created for my guests and me.
If you've thought about listening to Find the Good News, but have never pressed play, I'd encourage you to do so on this bonus feature I've titled "The Teasers."
Each episode's title and title card should appear on the screen, so if you're listening and feel you'd like to listen to that episode, just pause and visit www.FindTheGood.News. There, you'll find all recent episodes, the full line up, and my Beacon Series collection.
Thank you for taking this Good News journey with me.

Ep. 93 - The Truth Of Our Biases - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Professor Simran Jeet Singh—educator, writer, activist, and scholar.
==========
Sometimes I feel that I may have made a mistake when I named this podcast. Having a show called “Find the Good News” sets the precedent that my guests and I must only talk about positive things. While my end goal is to always lean our conversations toward goodness and good works, I realize fully that we can’t get there by ignoring the obvious troubles we are facing right now in the world.
Intentionally staring deeply into dark chasms filled with brokenness, suffering, despair, and injustice has been a part of my personal journey of awakening and healing since the very beginning, and if you’re a regular listener then you know I walk that path with the guests of this show. The most important part of that companionship is that we walk into those troubled places together, in support of one another, with an intention to learn from what we see and to bring information out that can be put to good work immediately.
My companion into the blight for this episode of “Find the Good News” is educator, writer, activist, and scholar Professor Simran Jeet Singh. Simran is regularly on the frontline of many conversations regarding issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
As an American citizen, and a devoted Sikh, Simran had to deal with many of these societal biases throughout his childhood, only to have those biases strengthened after the September 11th attacks in 2001. During our visit, he offered unique, firsthand perspectives that are honest about the truth of our biases.
In a country whose fabric is literally crafted from a manifold array of cultures, colors, and fibers, there is still a very strong tendency for those at the loom to bleach away the beautiful patterns that could emerge. The white-washing of history in an attempt to remove the stains and pains of the past is a very present reality.
As Simran and I discuss, it is absolutely critical that we acknowledge where we’ve been so we can heal the old multigenerational wounds inflicted by racism, bigotry, and an unwillingness to fully appreciate all the textures of humanity. He allowed me to speak with him openly, without judgment. He offered a brother’s ear, and heartfelt kindness.
The cyclical rhythms of injustice and ignorance have resulted in a swelling tidal rage that has crested the levies of apathy. Change is the law, and the flood of outrage that has emerged is a natural result of too much pain and discrimination for far too long. That is why I believe that conversations like the one I had with Simran Jeet Singh must happen more often. They are happening now.
As different as we each many seem on the surface, there is a human kinship and common dream of peace, equanimity, and well-being that can emerge if allies keep finding each other and working together. Visiting with Simran Jeet Singh filled me with an unbiased hope that it is possible.
Now, it’s time to tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.

Ep. 92 - The Resonant Strings - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Meido Moore Roshi, abbot of Korinji, a Rinzai Zen monastery, and author of "The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice" by Shambala Publications.
==========
Zen. In the circles I’ve traveled it is a word that is often said and even more misunderstood.
Truth? I am still trying to understand it myself.
More truth? When I feel like I’ve built a nice and sturdy framework for it, the structure I’ve constructed topples to sticks and stones.
I laugh about it. I cry about it. I let go. I start again.
“This,” I think, “is Zen!" But is it?
It’s this question that lies at the heart of my conversation with Meido Moore Roshi, abbot of Korinji, a Rinzai Zen monastery in Wisconsin, where he transmits Zen Buddhist teachings that can find roots as far back as 5th century India.
Meido is an 86th-generation Zen dharma heir and a 48th-generation holder of the lineage descended from Rinzai Gigen.
The Rinzai Zen way, as instructed by Meido Moore Roshi, places particular emphasis on making use of the body as part of the practice, as well as fine arts, and internal energetic work. It was clear to me that he has an elemental connection and appreciation for the natural world, sharing this with his students by incorporating earth, air, fire, and water into their training. While there is certainly an aesthetic to Zen that is quite peaceful and minimalist, Meido is clear that the Rinzai way is much more akin to boot camp than a day at the spa.
In this conversation, Meido graciously helped clarify many of the concepts of Zen Buddhism, not least of all these three; What am I? What is this life for? Why is there suffering? Tucked in the green hills and farmlands of Madison, Wisconsin there is, at this very moment, an abbot and his students sincerely seeking the answers to these very questions. Wisdom and compassion are cultivated. The wheel of the dharma turns. Transmission occurs. I am reminded that it is good to have obtained this human existence.
“This," I think, “is Zen."

Ep. 91 - The Magic Feather - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Don Jose Ruiz, Toltec Shaman and author of "The Medicine Bag: Shamanic Rituals & Ceremonies for Personal Transformation" from Hierophant Publishing
==========
There are events in our lives that charged with a specific energy. These moments can feel electric. Time perhaps feels bent. Sensations get prickly, and details seem enhanced. To the outside world these make look like nothing more than the ongoing and ordinary ebb-and-flow of occurrences, but for the soul connected to the happening these grooves in the timeline take on new meaning. For the experiencer, these moments are made holy, and there is high value in the ability to go back to them and experience the wisdom and lessons many times as the wheel of life turns on. When I was a boy I had an experience like this, and even as young as I was there was an awareness that I should create a remembrance of the experience, so I gathered a small item from nature and kept it close to me; I keep it close still.
This became a practice throughout my life, and as the small totems of remembrance grew I started keeping them in a small and simple leather bag. For years it has moved with me along the timeline, mostly hanging in a visible space where I rest, that is until recently.
Several months ago I discovered the book “The Medicine Bag: Shamanic Rituals & Ceremonies for Personal Transformation” by Toltec Shaman, and author of “The Fifth Agreement,” Don Jose Ruiz. Many mornings I would bring Jose’s book with me on my dawn walks at a nearby cemetery, a place that I go to connect with Spirit and to pray for the living souls whose remains lie there. Day-by-day Don Jose’s words clarified the value of the medicine bag but expanded its value far beyond the small leather pouch and the contents inside. Something old was shaking loose inside my heart, space where I’d been keeping this medicine bag somewhat secret and safe from the eyes of the world. Jose’s book was asking me to share it with the world in a new way that I had not before. Inspired, I reached out to Don Jose’s publisher, and he graciously agreed to share his time with me on “Find the Good News."
This conversation was absolutely pivotal to me. Even still, I am riding along with the pleasant current of our visit. Jose radiated sweetness and kind energy that was palpable even across the great space between us. He listened to my experiences with love, and the words he offered in return carried the aroma of truth that I have come to appreciate from great teachers of wisdom.
Don Jose Ruiz is connected to his ancient heritage, and like his father Don Miguel Ruiz, he continues to practice, expand, and share the Shamanic wisdom of their Toltec ancestors. In our visit, Jose shared highly personal family stories, connecting them directly to the details of our talk, humanizing and grounding each of them with clear and meaningful connections with strands running directly into his heart.
In truth, this conversation was an invitation far beyond the pages of his new book “The Medicine Bag." In the midst of the conversation, Don Jose Ruiz invited me into the medicine bag that is his heart. In some small way, I feel as though I am there still.
I encourage you to untie the tight leather cord that may be sealing your heart, your medicine bag, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.

Ep. 90 - The In Zone - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Chris Niebauer, Ph.D., Author of "No Self, No Problem: How Neuropsychology is Catching Up to Buddhism" from Hierophant Publishing
==========
I once read that the very toxic escalation of ego-driven “me” culture started its ascent with the invention of the mirror. Long before one could truly see their own reflection with clarity, the best way to gain a clear picture of the self was in a relationship with others. The mirror came along, the self became even more infatuated with the appearance of the self and thus began our evolutionary slide into the maddening nature of influencer culture and selfies.
We see images of ourselves—digitally displayed and shared—more than any other time in human history. Inflated egos rule the signals, indoctrinating us into tribes and cults of personality, and somewhere in this maelstrom we cling to identities that are little more than piles of historical rubbish, random filaments of experience and memory are drawn together to form a conscious being that I call “me." I look over there, and I see another cluster that I call “you."
What happens when we start sifting through the curated bits and pieces that make up these selves we’ve become so enamored with? Am I my brain, my body, my memories, my nerves, my breath? When I feel love in my heart, where is my heart exactly, and what do I even mean by that? When I am sad and I suffer, where is the suffering and who is it happening to? What about my love for you, or the compassion that is activated when you are in pain? Is this indicative of a connected and collective bond between you and I that dissolves the common concepts of individualism and identity that we are familiar with? I brought these questions and more to my conversation on Find the Good News when I visited with Chris Niebauer, Ph.D., author of “No Self, No Problem: How Neuropsychology is Catching Up to Buddhism.”
In the early 90s, Chris noticed many similarities in psychology, neuroscience, and the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and many other Eastern spiritual traditions, and he has explored these intersections for over two decades. What Chris presents is a confirmation that the latest research in neuropsychology resonates with the Buddhist doctrine of “no self,” which refers to the solidified ego identity as a fabrication of the left side of the brain. This doesn’t mean you don’t exist, or that you are somehow not real, but rather that the ego that you’ve identified with is perhaps not the real you at all.
What’s beautiful about Chris Niebauer's book, the exercises it contains, and this conversation is that they encourage us to go on an expedition into inner and uncharted zones that challenge who we think we are. “No Self, No Problem” brings us to a shared space outside of corrosive hyper-individualism, beyond the “otherhood” of the left brain, and into the right-brain experience of brotherhood.
Now, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.

Ep. 89 - The Gathering Fire - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Diana Rowan, Author of "The Bright Way: Five Steps To Freeing The Creative Within" from New World Library
==========
15 years ago I was asked to speak to a group of graphic design students about creativity in the field of graphic communications. As I sat down to draft my presentation I asked myself, “What is creativity, and where does it come from?"
This question led me down a track far outside the field of graphic design, on into the nature of reality itself, and I have come to believe that creativity is an actual spiritual force, not unlike love, and that when tested it can be seen manifesting in kaleidoscopic ways throughout creation. If I were going to speak to these students about creative design then I would have to speak to them HONESTLY about the nature of creativity and how design proves the existence of this ordered, balancing, and glorious force. Not only is this creative principle in us, but it is outside of us. When we recognize it, connect to it, and apply it, wonders emerge.
That all sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? And one would think the realization alone would change your life. Happily ever after! Well, that’s not the case, at least not for me. Knowing isn’t doing, and I, like many, get stuck.
Sometimes creative momentum takes a full-stop, and getting the creaking pipes flowing again can be a real challenge. This is precisely why, I believe, special beings like Diana Rowan—author of “The Bright Way: Five Steps To Freeing The Creative Within”—are born into this world. They’re here to help the rest of us get unstuck, to get the elements of our creativity harmonizing again.
Part story and part call-to-action, her bright way could motivate even the most passive creative among us. Because her “bright way” method is elemental in nature, it is easy to adopt, apply, and understand because the metaphorical reminders exist all around us.
As you’ll learn in her book, and in this conversation, Diana is no stranger to being stuck herself. Her “bright way” path draws together the teachings of wisdom traditions from around the world in a fresh and palatable way.
I was not surprised to learn that Diana is an accomplished harpist. It compliments her kind and ethereal tones as she shares what she has learned.
If you’ve ever poured sand on your own fire of inspiration, then heed the advice of Diana Rowan. Creativity is in you, particular to you, waiting on you to say “yes." Your creativity wants to be loosed on the world, and lead you along a brighter, lovely way.
Now, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.

Ep. 88 - The Shimmering Truth - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Ellen Meredith, DA, EEMAP, Author of "The Language Your Body Speaks: Self-Healing with Energy Medicine" from New World Library
==========
When is the last time you stopped and really listened to your body? What physical aches do you live with daily? How are compensating for them? Do you have chronic issues that seem to never go away? Maybe, like many, you just feel off, heavy, out of balance, or worn down. Perhaps, like many people all across the world, you treat each and every creak and groan with pharmaceutical solutions that carry a landslide of negative side effects in their tailwind. What if there were other ways to approach the creaks and groans in your body?
In this episode, I visit with energy medicine practitioner Ellen Meredith, author of “The Language Your Body Speaks: Self-Healing with Energy Medicine.” Ellen has been practicing energy medicine for over 35 years, and during that time she has helped countless individuals harness the power of their body—their energy body—to bring balance, wellness, and health back to their lives.
Her book is a wonderful mix of stories, examples, and exercises that help people get in touch with their source code, the original human language, the language of energy. Ellen took the time to walk me through one of her key practices, and she applied her guiding insights to a personal practice of my own, enhancing it in ways I had not considered.
This conversation is a wonderful companion to Ellen’s new book and the good work she continues through her energy medicine practice. If like me, you have even the most rudimentary understanding of human energy, then this is a good place to start your path to healing and health in a very multi-dimensional way.
Now, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.

Ep. 87 - The Slippage Ft. Heather Regan White - Find the Good News with Brother Oran
Thursday Jun 04, 2020
Thursday Jun 04, 2020
Ep. 87 - The Slippage - Ft. Heather Regan White, Journalist with the Southwest Daily News
==========
We live in strange times, made stranger and more disorienting by a steady stream of conflicting news and information signals from sunrise to sunset. Sifting through these competing signals and processing them to find relevant bits that add value to your life can be an exhausting grind with the potential to wear down a mind’s ability to discern truth from fiction.
Many are able to recall a time before the excessive pings-and-dings, reminders, alerts, and the ever-present “breaking news” ticker tape. In truth, my sheer exhaustion with this perpetual flow played a large role in the creation of “Find the Good News” podcast. I suppose we all have my general sense of being fed up for that.
Still, among the overlapping signals, there are those clear voices that curate and create content that is trustworthy. These are transmissions that I desperately crave, untainted and unbiased by politics, devoted to sharing plain information that can be made useful immediately without clawing through disorienting layers of spin and fog.
In this episode of “Find the Good News” I get to share my conversation with one such voice that I have come to appreciate. Enter my conversation with Heather Regan White, a journalist in my hometown of Sulphur, Louisiana.
Heather has been reporting, writing, and sharing for 25 years, and in that time she has become a clear and resonant sound of awareness in our community. As much as I appreciate her good work in our local paper, “The Southwest Daily News,” I have grown just as fond of her even and balanced presence on social media. In a community congested with competing “information station” groups and pages that have more in common with daytime talk-and-fight shows than they do with journalistic integrity, it is refreshing to know that a clear signal like Heather’s is readily available.
In my mind, Heather is an ally in the mission to cut through the noisy world of spin, and it was an absolute pleasure for me to have this candid visit with her.
Next time you get online or pick up a paper to see what’s going on in the world, you would be doing yourself a favor to look for a byline by Heather Regan White. You’ll be guaranteed to get the truth delivered by a dedicated journalist, and from time-to-time, there might be a well-balanced and educated opinion to go along with it.
Now, it’s time to make space in your heart for the common good, clear a corner for some good old-fashioned, hometown truth, then press play on a little good news.

Ep. 86 - The Divine Feminine - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Clark Strand & Perdita Finn, co-authors of The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary
==========
Almost from the very moment of my initial awakening in the summer of 1995, I’ve had a hunger to learn, and reading was a critical source of nutrients for my ravenous mind. I’ve read many wonderful books since that day, and while my mind may not be as hungry, it still makes a healthy meal of many wonderful written works.
In the full scope of all the works I’ve read, there are those very special books that are more like profound life-events. I’m sure you understand my meaning. These are the books that place you in timeless spaces, moving beyond the realm of simple transference of information, or pleasurable stimulation. These are the works that become phenomena, and when you turn the last page your mind takes special note of the time and space in which you absorbed its message. Recently, I completed one such multifaceted work, so layered and rich that I reached out to the authors to see if they would visit with me on "Find the Good News."
Enter my conversation Clark Strand & Perdita Finn, co-authors of the book “The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary.” On the surface, this book appears to be about the Rosary—and it is about that—but I very quickly learned that it while it is about this cherished, predominantly Catholic form of prayer, this inspired work was about so much more.
”The Way of the Rose,” through the Rosary, reaches down through the historic ages of humankind, and further still into prehistory, sinking to the very formation of the earth, on deeper to the creation of the universe. In this dynamic and invigorating conversation, Clark & Perdita graciously share their intimate discoveries as they followed the promptings and messages of the Lady—or the Girl—around the world and through the ages to produce “The Way of the Rose,” a work which reveals cross-cultural connections of the Divine Feminine using poetic and prophetic beats, unlike any work I’ve encountered before.
What intrigued me most of all about “The Way of the Rose,” and the story of an encounter that Clark shares, is the sideways nature in which their relationship began. As someone that has been using a Rosary as a part of my own prayer life, long before I made my cycle within the organized Catholic Church, it was refreshing to visit with people that have experienced such powerful promptings. An ongoing journey like that of Clark Strand & Perdita Finn longs to be shared, or in this instance, cries out across the ages to be born.
I enjoyed this conversation with Clark Strand and Perdita Finn. They were so genuine, kind, and so open to sharing the sweet aroma of this unfolding work called “The Way of the Rose.”
Before you listen to this episode, I encourage you to look for the string that’s running through your life or the common links in the chain of your existence that binds one thing to the next. Stop for a moment on the beads that have formed around every sacred moment you’ve experienced. Gently go through them one-by-one. Maybe, if you stay in this garland long enough, you’ll see the presence of a loving mother somewhere along your way.
Now, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.

Ep. 85 - The Growing Voice - Ft. Dominique Darbonne of The Flamethrowers
==========
Since starting this Good News podcast signal, it’s been my great pleasure to meet people from my region that I may not have met otherwise. The truth is that this transmission has allowed me to do much more than simply meet them; I’ve gotten to know them in some very deep and personal ways. More often than not, when I finish one of these visits, I leave the conversation feeling like I’ve gained a new friend. Other times, it goes beyond friendship and expands into the category of an alliance. In talking with Dominique Darbonne, I gained a friend and an ally.
My local listeners may know Dominique as the singer for the on-fire band “The Flamethrowers,” but like each of us, her story goes so much deeper than her vocal vibrations.
I feel that I had this conversation with Dominique at a very peculiar time in her life. It was clear from our visit that there is a rising passion inside of her to use her voice beyond the local stage—even away from song—to bring attention to local injustices that affect her community, and champion for those the underdogs that are working tirelessly to make this region more civil and healthy.
She reminds me, yet again, that it is important to use right speech and right action when you’re on your path to waking up. Beyond that, know who your allies are and bring them together to speak as one voice as often as you can. That, dear friends, is a community worth speaking out for.
So, perk up, maybe steep some tea, and enjoy some green & open space in your hometown. Think about how the world is changing, how it’s changing you, and how you can put your reflections and your voice to work for those around you, then press play on a little good news.

Ep. 84 - The Golden Vine - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Corin Grillo author of The Angel Experiment: A 21-Day Magical Adventure to Heal Your Life
==========
When you hear the word “Angel,” what comes to mind? If you’re like most of the people I’ve encountered, or if you’re like I was 25 years ago, then you probably draw up a pretty specific image. Maybe you think of chubby little cherubs with plump and rosy cheeks, sporting harps, and heart-shaped arrows. Perhaps you call to mind images of majestic humanoid beings with grand wings, glimmering armor, armed with glimmering shields and flaming swords.
For me, the earliest image I can call to mind is from an antique painting that still hangs on the wall in the bedroom of my long-deceased Great Grandfather. Two children, a boy, and a girl are crossing a dilapidated bridge under the veil of night. Many of the planks are missing. Over them both is the image of a beautiful woman, draped in fine fabrics, her arms spread wide, her downy wings tucked firmly behind her as she projects and guides the children to safety. I’m sure you know the image I’m talking about; it’s a classic.
Over two decades ago, all my preconceived notions about Angels came crumbling down, and I was given cause to ponder again these seemingly mythical Celestials. I entered into a mystery that I’ve been trying to wrap my arms around for a long time, and recently I was blessed with further clarity. Enter my conversation Corin Grillo, author of the book “The Angel Experiment: A 21-Day Magical Adventure to Heal Your Life” published by New World Library, and founder of “The Angel Alchemy Academy."
In this episode, Corin shares many of the details surrounding a beautiful miracle that changed her life and explains how the unique intercession of Angels on that day started an ongoing relationship with these Celestial beings.
As a trained psychotherapist, Corin was already working to enhance the well-being of others, but by channeling the assistance her Angelic advocates she has enhanced her gifts as a healer and teacher. A big part of her role as a teacher can be experienced by the Angel curious in her book, “The Angel Experiment,” where she offers a 21-day series of invocations, prayers, and exercises organized in a way that puts Angelic friendships to work multidimensionally for anyone that’s ready to peel back another layer to their life.
I enjoyed this conversation with Corin Grillo, and I’m thankful for the special answers she shared with me, a message with clarification offered by the Angels surrounding her during our conversation.
Now, it’s time to suspend any hint of disbelief you may have, spread the metaphorical wings of your mind, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news.
